Today's Itinerary and Activities
Day 5: May 10
Today we discussed the Civil War and resistance in Naples, and took an in-depth look at the Port of Naples – supplying a war from across the sea. For our day in Naples we were joined by our Italian colleague Mario di Prospo. We started our day (after traveling from Salerno to Naples by train) at Castello Saint Elmo over looking the Port of Naples and the city with the backdrop of Monte Vesuvio. Mario told us about the two phases of resistance in Naples between 8-12 September and 27-30 September. We considered issues of how the Germans implemented terra bruciata (scorched earth) in the area before finally retreating. We also considered the aftermath for the population who were forced to try to live in a town destroyed first by Allied bombs and then by retreating Germans. It was so important to hear Mario's perspective as a local historian.
Today's seminar questions are: The people of Naples live first under German and then Allied occupation. How are these two experiences similar and different? and How does geography and logistics affect the battlefield?
