The Tour
The course is taught on location throughout Italy at historic sites, monuments, and battlefields. Lasting reminders of Italy’s brutal civil war are evident in its cities and countryside. Italy's unique geography made Second World War battles there especially difficult. Thus, the wartime legacy and Italian terrain provide students with an ideal classroom and subject. Although the course addresses the war in Italy as a whole, special attention is paid to the Canadian contribution to the campaign in the battles for Ortona, the Liri Valley and the Gothic Line.

Historical thinking
The professional development program builds on the approach outlined by the Big Six historical thinking concepts. Soldiers' military service files form the basis for the evidence-based research approach to crafting biographies, which we use as historical entry points into the greater picture of the war as well as pedagogical entry points for learning using primary sources. Art, literature and poetry, monuments and memorials also serve as sources in our site-based learning experience on the tour.
